Lady Ponies Look to Be at Best for Central A
HAVRE, Mont (NMB) The Havre High girls basketball assembled quite the regular season in 2011-2012. A young team, led by seniors Jaclyn and Sammy Evans, the Ponies pulled off wins against Class B powerhouse Malta, and defeated conference rival Browning twice en route to the regular season Central A title.

However the regular season is over and the stakes will be raised come Friday night when Havre starts its stint at the Central A tournament. While the tournament will bring a number of changes, if the Lady Ponies are to find success one thing must stay the same.

"Its a one game at the season now and you have be at your best every time you take the floor" Havre head coach Dustin Kraske said. "That is one of the things we have been teaching-be at your best together."

"Its going to take all of us to be successful at a divisional tournament."

Havre will take on the winner of the Park and Fergus High contest Friday night at 8pm. You will be able to hear that game on 610 KOJM and KOJM.com

Northern-C Results: Chinook Boys
GREAT FALLS, Mont (NMB)
FIRST ROUND: The Chinook boys stepped on the court with an athletic Highwood team in the first round of the Northern-C Tournament. After going on a 20-0 run in the first quarter, the Mountaineers made it difficult for the Sugarbeeters to close the gap. Chinook did manage to get within seven points late in the game, but it wasn't enough. Highwood would go on to seal their 21st straight win 57-45 at the final buzzer. Grant Tilleman led the way for Chinook with 14 points, while Scott Schmitt, Barry Murnion, and Zach Molyneaux added eight points each. Chinook moves into a Loser Out contest Thursday morning at 8:00am against Dutton/Brady.

Havre Ice Hawks to Honor Seniors
HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) - The Havre Ice Hawks will be back in action this weekend taking on the Bozeman Black and Red teams at the Havre Ice Dome.

Friday night will be senior night for the Ice Hawks, as they recognize their seniors, Joey DeVries, Ethan Hettinger, Chase Rolf, Levi Wavrick, Nate Welch, and Timmy Welch before taking on the Bozeman Black at 8:15 pm.

Saturday Havre will be back on the ice for a contest with Bozeman Red at noon.

Jackson Named Frontier POTW
HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) - MSU-Northern's Devin Jackson was named the Frontier Conference's player of the week after helping the Lights to victories over Rocky Mountain and Carroll College.

For the weekend, Jackson averaged 22 points, four rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.In Friday's contest with Rocky Mountain, Jackson netted 21 points, but was only getting started. The following night against Carroll, the Junior from Denver scored 23 points, including hitting 7-of-12 three point attempts.

Jackson's efforts helped the Lights maintain their position as the 22nd ranked NAIA team, and improve to 22-6 on the season.

Northern Stays Same in Polls
HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) - The MSU-Northern Lights stayed steady in the polls while Montana-Western jumped up a spot in the latest NAIA national rankings on Monday.

The MSU-Northern Lights remained at 22 in the polls this week, coming off weekend victories against Rocky Mountain College and Carroll College on Friday. Northern will look to keep pace this week with a road trip to Westminster and Lewis Clark State.

Meanwhile Montana Western takes the top spot of for Frontier Conference teams, moving up one spot to 14th. Westminster was listed as one of the universities receiving votes in this weeks poll. Oklahoma Baptist earned 9 first place votes to earn the top honor.

Meanwhile in the women's poll, Oklahoma City again took the top spot after receiving all 12 first place votes. Although the Lady Warriors fell to Westminster this past weekend, Lewis-Clark State still ranks above the Griffins. LC State dropped 5 spots from 8th to 13th, while Westminster moved up a couple places from 16th to 18th.

Montana State University-Northern was among the teams listed as receiving votes.

Samson Anounces Signing of 8
HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) - The Montana State-Northern football team anounced the signing of eight new recruits on Tuesday, headlined by a pair of standouts from Billings West High School, Jordan Brusio and Patrick Barnett.

Brusio, a 6-foot, 210lbs linebacker and defensive end joins the Lights after setting a school record at Billings West with 20.5 sacks in the 2011 season, including 20 tackles for loss. "Jordan is a great Talent with a great knack with rushing the passer" Northern Coach Mark Samson said. "He is a high motor guy that has great get-off and quickness."

He was selected to play in the Shrine Game and MonDak, and was named to the 1st Team All Conference and 1st Team All State.

Barnett will not only join his teammate, Brusio, in the Shrine Game and Mondak, but also to the Hi Line as well. The 6-foot-3, 230lbs standout was a first team all conference and all state selection on the offensive line and defensive line, but was recruited to play defensive end for the Lights. "Patrick has very good size and will continue to get bigger" Samson added.

"He has a great frame for a high school kid and should have a great career."

MSU-Northern also added two more in state athletes: Gus Murdock, a linebacker from Hardin and Julius Frehse a defensive back from Denton.

The Lights continued to establish their presence on the recruiting trail outside of the state as well, adding 3 prospects from California and 1 from Oregon. Center Adolfo Robles, safety Garrett Jericoff, and linebacker Austin Ybarra will all depart California to don Light uniforms. Meanwhile, Greg Anson, a 6-foot-1 wide receiver joins Northern after finishing his prep career at Willamette High School in Eugene, Oregon.

HHS Swim and Wrestling to Hold Awards Night
HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) - The Havre Swim and Wrestling Teams will be holding their awards nights.

The Swim Team's awards night will be held on Monday, February 27th, beginning at 6pm. Everyone that participated in swimming will be a guest of Taco Johns for tacos.

The following night, Tuesday February 28th, the Havre wrestling team will hold their awards ceremony. Everyone who participated in wrestling is invited to attend for a potluck dinner.

During the events, the coaches will talk about their season and present awards to the athletes. Both of these events will be held in the Havre High School Cafeteria.

Skylights Look to Keep Shining on Road
HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) - The MSU-Northern women's basketball team closed out their regular season home schedule this past weekend, earning wins against Rocky Mountain College Friday and Carroll College on Saturday. Against the Lady Saints on Saturday, the Skylights took away everything Carroll was trying to execute.

"Our kids just kept our composure" Skylight Coach Chris Mouat said. "Down the stretch we executed and found a way to make baskets..everyone kind of contributed for us in this one. Bottom line-we got stops when the game was on the line."

Saturday night also marked the final regular season home game for the Skylights lone senior in Laramie Schwenke. The Malta native continued her stellar play, shining bright on her final night with a 16 point performance. "She's a winner" Mouat added. "Even if we dont win, she'll cut her arm off and do what it takes to make our team successful."

"If you watch our players, they rally around her."

The Skylights will look to close out the regular season strong with one final road trip. The Skylights head to Salt Lake City to take on Westminster Thursday night, then head to Idaho to take on Lewis-Clark State on Saturday night.

Both games on both nights will be carried on KPQX 92.5 FM and KPQX.com

Knudsen Nets 17 in MSU-Billings Loss
BILLINGS, Mont. (NMB) - During the annual "Pink Zone" game, the Montana State University Billings women's basketbal team could not find their "zone offensively Saturday night, falling to Seattle Pacific University 70-56.

Down by as many as 22, the Yellowjackets attempted to mount a comeback, twice pulling even in the second half, but every time MSUB rallied they Falcons responded. MSU-Billings struggled with their shooting in the first, hitting less than 20% of their shots before shooting 48% in the second half. However the early deficit proved to be too much as the Yellowjackets could not over come the 33-18 halftime deficit.

Malta High School Product Bobbi Knudsen finished the night 8-20 for 17 points, again leading the Yellowjackets in scoring.

MSUB will look to change their luck next week as they wrap up their 2011-12 regular season with a pair of games. The Yellowjackets will first welcome Simon Fraser University on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. before they welcome Western Washington University to Alterowitz Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 25.
